Suspect gets into a shootout with cops after traffic stop goes wrong
A routine traffic stop for a blown brake lamp quickly spirals into a dangerous two-state police chase after investigators say the suspect pulled a gun during an altercation with a Michigan State Trooper. What started in Niles, Michigan soon crossed into Indiana, ending with a crashed police cruiser, a massive riverbank manhunt, and a chaotic search near the St. Joseph River.
According to investigators, 32-year-old Joshua Ringle fled from officers after a struggle during the traffic stop. Police say the pursuit entered downtown South Bend, where stop sticks were deployed before the suspect crashed into a police cruiser and ran into a wooded area near the river. Multiple agencies responded, including SWAT, K-9 units, drones, and South Bend Police.
Prosecutors later concluded that law enforcement acted appropriately during the incident. Officials stated that Ringle died from blunt force trauma and not from gunshot wounds.
