Традиция Rat Trick появилась случайно в 1995 году. Перед одним из матчей в раздевалку Florida Panthers забежала крыса. Игрок Скотт Мелланби прогнал её ударом клюшки, а в той же игре забросил две шайбы. Вратарь пошутил: «Это не hat trick, а rat trick». Болельщикам история так понравилась, что с тех пор они бросают на лёд пластиковых крыс после побед команды, превратив это в официальную традицию.
